Reporting to the General Counsel, Retail, this Legal Counsel is responsible for assisting the Retail business to service its grower customers. That means working in a fast-paced, growing, challenging and satisfying environment and with a variety of knowledgeable partners.

Nutrien requires an experienced Legal Counsel to be based at Retail headquarters and to work with branch locations across the U.S. The successful candidate must be able to hit the ground running and, in order to do so, will need to arrive at Nutrien with a well-developed set of skills and the ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.

Given Nutriens growth orientation and strategy, it is imperative that this person possess exceptional communication and negotiation skills, in addition to being commercially astute.

This position is located in Loveland, Colorado, U.S.A. and is available for remote work.

What you will do:

  • Independently review, draft, and negotiate contracts and other commercial documents in support of numerous business units and partners
  • Partner with paralegals and contract managers responsible for day-to-day management of contracts in the Retail legal group in order to provide legal guidance and creative problem solving
  • Partner with the business to successfully drive the initiatives they are championing and to provide overall support for execution of commercial strategy
  • Coordinate with other legal team members and company stakeholders in order to effectively collaborate across all levels of the organization
  • Manage legal costs in connection with external legal services
  • Give strategic, prompt, and concise contract and legal advice to business partners and management
  • Conduct trainings for business and field locations on best practices and other contract or legal topics
  • Support legal team to improve efficiencies within the department, including creating new templates, streamlining of processes, and driving usage and functionality of the departments contracts management system
  • Travel within North America and potentially, occasionally, abroad as necessary for meetings and other work

What you will bring:

  • Be a member of an Association Bar in the U.S. with the requirements to become a member of the Colorado Bar Association
  • Minimum of 5 years of practice experience required. Corporate counsel experience would be a strong asset
  • Broad transactional background and significant experience in commercial and corporate law
  • Basic knowledge of one or more of the following areas would be a plus: construction intellectual property, environmental, or real estate law
  • Proven ability to drive business forward and achieve results, while managing risk and protecting the company
  • Demonstrate eagerness and ability to learn industry, business, and operational matters quickly
  • Able to effectively manage tight timelines and balance competing priorities
  • Business, tax or financial acumen is attractive
  • Exhibit exceptional communication skills and attention to detail
  • Team player with highly developed interpersonal skills
  • Being a highly effective, practical lawyer with a track record of value creation is desired

As important as the technical skills this individual brings to the table are their interpersonal competencies. Specifically, the successful candidate must bring the following attributes:

  • Strong leadership skills and management presence with an ability to interface across all levels of the organization
  • A strong work ethic and an ability to meet deadlines without sacrificing quality of service
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including verbal and written communication and drafting skills
  • Ability to be a hands-on lawyer who is practical, pragmatic and customer-service oriented, with willingness and ability to learn Nutriens Retail business in order to be a key contributor
  • Demonstrated business judgment and the ability to work both independently and as a team player with proven legal judgment and excellent strategic and analytical skills
  • An outstanding relationship building capability and a collaborative working style be a strong team player with the ability to work collaboratively with employees in different regions and with varying levels of seniority, offering timely and solution-focused practical advice and consultation
  • Proven ability to build and maintain trusted advisor relationship with stakeholders including external counsel, customers and all levels of management at Nutrien

Compensation & Benefits:

The salary range for a Legal Counsel in Loveland, CO is $114,450 - $ 163,500. This range is estimated for the Legal Counsel position in Loveland, CO. Actual salary and benefits may be different based upon location.

We provide an attractive benefits package that includes comprehensive medical, dental, vision coverage, and life insurance and well as disability coverage for positions working more than 30 hours per week. In addition to base pay, this role is also eligible to participate in our annual incentive plan and long-term incentive plan, consistent with the terms of our plan(s), which provide discretionary award opportunities reflecting components such as performance of the company and the employee.
